Our very first flight out of New Orleans was delayed by 3 hours, so the rest of our trip was completely thrown off. We were supposed to make a quick stop in Amsterdam before continuing on to Nairobi. Instead we ended up with a 7 hour layover in Amsterdam. Time to explore!
CURRENCY EXCHANGE: EUROS
Our first move was to convert some of our money to Euros before leaving the airport.
TAKING THE TRAIN DOWNTOWN
If I were by myself, I would have just gotten a cab downtown, but my boyfriend grabbed a map and figured out how we could take a short train trip downtown. It was difficult though because everything was written in Dutch, so we had to ask a lot of people for help. 15 minutes later we were downtown and exploring!
MOST THINGS IN DUTCH
In Kenya, most things were in English, but in Amsterdam everything was in Dutch. It was a lot more intimidating trying to navigate through an area when we didn't know what the signs meant.
Yes, fries are extremely popular in Amsterdam! There were everywhere, so we grabbed some and they were delicious.
CAFES: MARIJUANA IS LEGAL
"Cafes" or coffeshops are very plentiful, but we're not taking about the basic ones that serve coffee and tea. They are selling marijuana and people are smoking, drinking, or eating it. Marijuana is legal there.
