How to Play Tourist in New Orleans

New Orleans is such a big tourist city. 9 million people traveled to New Orleans in 2015.  If you live here, your life takes place outside of the super touristy spots.  But sometimes we should dive right in and vacation in our own city.

BEIGNETS AT CAFE DU MONDE

Nothing makes you feel more like a tourist than eating beignets at Café Du Monde in the French Quarter.  I love beignets but if I am really feigning for them, I go through the Café Du Monde drive-thru in Metairie and eat them in the car with a jacket in my lap….so not being a tourist.

TAKE THE FERRY OR STREETCAR

The ferry and streetcar are not daily parts of my commute so taking them instantly makes me feel like I am on an adventure. And talk about some epic pictures of the city! Instant instagram magic!

TAKE A WALKING TOUR

New Orleans has so much history that it’s impossible for anyone to know the stories that fill the cracks and crevices of the buildings that makeup New Orleans.   My boyfriend and I took a Treme walking tour he found on Groupon one week and it was very interesting to hear the stories that surround the places we walk past everyday.

TAKE AN AERIAL TOUR

If it’s a special occasion and you want to splurge, take an aerial tour of the city. My boyfriend booked one for my birthday a few years back, and we saw the city like we’ve never seen it before even though we’ve both lived here our entire lives.

TRY A NEW RESTAURANT

There are a countless number of lists of the best restaurants in New Orleans, and I doubt that anyone has tried them all.  If you want to feel like you’re on vacation in your own city, eat somewhere you’ve never been.
